How To: Deep Clean Your Carpet | Godfreys

Method 1: Baking Soda and Vacuum

Materials Needed:

  • Baking soda
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Essential oil (optional)
  • Small sieve or shaker

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Area: Remove any small objects or furniture from the carpeted area you want to clean.
  2. Sprinkle Baking Soda: Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda evenly over the carpet. You can add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the baking soda for a pleasant scent.
  3. Let it Sit: Allow the baking soda to sit on the carpet for at least 15-30 minutes. This will give it time to absorb odors and loosen dirt.
  4. Vacuum: After the waiting period, vacuum the carpet thoroughly. Make multiple passes in different directions to ensure you pick up all the baking soda and dirt.
  5. Replace Furniture: Once you’re satisfied with the cleanliness, return any furniture or objects to their original positions.

Method 2: Vinegar and Water Solution

Materials Needed:

  • White vinegar
  • Warm water
  • Spray bottle
  • Clean cloth or sponge
  • Vacuum cleaner

Steps:

  1. Prepare the Solution: Mix equal parts of white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle. For a small area, 1 cup of each should be sufficient.
  2. Pre-Vacuum: Start by thoroughly vacuuming the carpet to remove loose dirt and debris.
  3. Test in an Inconspicuous Area: Before applying the solution to the entire carpet, test it in a small, inconspicuous area to ensure it doesn’t cause any discoloration or damage.
  4. Apply the Solution: Spray the vinegar and water solution evenly onto the carpet. Avoid saturating the carpet; a light misting is sufficient.
  5. Scrub Gently: Using a clean cloth or sponge, gently scrub the carpet in areas with stains or heavy soiling. Work in a circular motion, being careful not to rub too aggressively, as this may damage the carpet fibers.
  6. Blot and Rinse: After scrubbing, blot the area with a clean, dry cloth to absorb the moisture and dirt. If necessary, rinse the area by spraying it with plain water and blotting again.
  7. Let it Dry: Allow the carpet to air dry. You can help speed up the drying process by opening windows or using fans.
  8. Vacuum Again: Once the carpet is completely dry, vacuum it again to fluff up the fibers and remove any remaining residue.
