Carpet Cleaning (2 Ways to DIY)

Carpet Cleaning (2 Ways to DIY). If you could only do one Spring Cleaning task, what would it be? Having the carpets cleaned (whether it’s done by me or by a pro) is my top priority for spring cleaning. With children, pets and those random spills and drips, our carpets can take quite a beating. It doesn’t have to be difficult to remove stubborn spots and giving our carpets a little refresh.

Here are two ways you can DIY carpet cleaning at home:

  1. Baking Soda and Vinegar Method:

    • Start by removing any large debris or loose dirt from the carpet by vacuuming it thoroughly.
    • Sprinkle baking soda generously over the entire carpet surface. Baking soda helps to neutralize odors and acts as a natural cleaning agent.
    • Let the baking soda sit on the carpet for at least 30 minutes to an hour. This allows it to absorb odors and any oils or dirt embedded in the carpet fibers.
    • In a spray bottle, mix equal parts water and white vinegar.
    • Lightly spray the vinegar solution over the baking soda-covered carpet. The mixture will create a foaming action, which helps to lift dirt and stains.
    • Using a soft-bristle brush or sponge, gently scrub the carpet in circular motions to work the baking soda and vinegar solution into the fibers.
    • Allow the carpet to dry completely, then vacuum it again to remove any remaining baking soda residue.
  2. Hydrogen Peroxide and Dish Soap Solution:

    • Mix 1 cup of hydrogen peroxide with 1 teaspoon of dish soap in a spray bottle.
    • Before applying the solution, test it on a small, inconspicuous area of the carpet to ensure it doesn’t cause discoloration or damage.
    • Spray the solution onto the stained or dirty areas of the carpet, making sure to saturate them evenly.
    • Using a clean cloth or sponge, gently blot the treated areas to work the solution into the carpet fibers and lift the dirt or stain.
    • Allow the solution to sit on the carpet for 10-15 minutes to break down the dirt and stains.
    • After the allotted time, blot the area with a clean, damp cloth to remove the cleaning solution and any remaining residue.
    • Repeat the process if necessary, depending on the severity of the stains.
    • Once the carpet is clean, allow it to air dry completely before walking on it again.
